A few months ago, I bought this percolator in a local store--needed my coffee right away! I had used drip coffee makers for years but noticed the glass carafes are thinner now than they used to be and instructions advise not to put in dishwasher, which if you disregard can give you brittle glass which could chip and cut your fingers (yes, personal experience). Also, with the drip coffee maker I got tired of coffee splattering from the basket and drips from the carafe onto the heated plate. So I wanted a coffee maker that looks clean without too much fuss, and I chose this one because the brushed stainless exterior is easy to clean, and coffee stains on the interior don't show if you aren't inclined to scrub them off. It has the water/coffee level window on the handle, and the glass knob is a fun retro touch. And the spout doesn't drip! It makes good coffee very quickly and keeps it hot. You do have to unplug it when finished, or you could put it on a timer. I'm very happy with this percolator!

Here's my take on the whole coffee thing. If you are a coffee guru, then you are going to go through all the trouble it seems to take to make the perfect cup, and this review is a mute point, or you are going to go to Starbucks and pay for the perfect cup. Most people who make coffee at home and in the morning (time permitting) are like me.

Here's my ideal coffee scenario:

I believe that buying my favorite high quality whole beans (Kenya AA), grinding them myself (coarsely, so they don't fall through the metal filter), and using the method I believe is best (the nostalgic percolator), is the perfect way to brew. It's my own preference: 1/3 nostalgia, 1/3 good beans, 1/3 convenience. They say that percolating coffee is burning beans. I and many other would disagree. I wake up grind my beans fill them and some cold tap water into the percolator. I wait 10 minutes while listening to that wonderful sound and smelling that great aroma!!! PERFECT!

For the GURUS, this may seem like heresy, but for me its the best of all worlds.

This model has, so far been great, 4 stars. The "glass knob" is plastic, whatever! Liars!. I've been brewing at the 6 cup line (water and beans) for 5 months at 4 to 5 times a week. Still hot and still consistent. It brews the same every time. This consistency over time is what I think will make or break this product. If it cools down a bit I will clean it. If it gets worse then I will be less than satisfied. If it fails before five years then I will be less than satisfied. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to make MY AMOUNT of coffee and how black I like it. I cannot set the heat or the brew time (it's all automatic), but the coffee comes out very hot (not burned) and very dark.

I've had a lot of different brands and types of coffee makers, but this is a real gem! I love smelling the coffee waft throughout the house as it's perking, and it's easy to use and clean. It takes a little effort to get the right amount of coffee for brewing, but then again, my husband really likes his coffee strong. I love that the percolator brews incredibly HOT coffee! And the added bonus is that it's easy to take along when we go traveling. No filters needed, cleans up in a snap, and nothing to break!

I originally purchased this percolator to throw in my suitcase for business and vacation travel because I can't stand those funky hotel coffee brewers and cheap single-serving coffee packets. But, this Presto percolator is such a fast brew, the coffee is so much better, and it is so easy to take care of, that it has become my daily brewer, even when I am home. There are no gaskets to remove (stove-top espresso makers), there is nowhere for mold to build up (have you ever looked at the area where the coffee comes out of the electric coffee makers after a few days?), and all of the parts are stainless steel or plastic. Plus, it doubles as a teapot while traveling; just wash it, add water, and plug it in! In less then 5 minutes, you can have a hot cup of tea in your hotel room. The parts are all solid, sturdy, and fit together perfectly, too.

First of all, the reason we bought this is because, in general, percolators make great tasting coffee. They can turn even the worst quality beans into a good cup of coffee. Initially, the Presto lived up to our expectations. And after doing the following, it is once again making great cups of coffee.

Tip #1 - Grind your coffee using the appropriate setting.

After some usage, we would at times get a mouthful of grinds. We realized it was important to use the percolator setting on the coffee grinder at the supermarket. Since then, an occasional coffee grind finds its way into our cup.

Tip #2 - Clean the filter basket with a brush.

Despite cleaning the pot before each usage, the coffee was gradually getting weaker each day. We then realized that the holes in the bottom of the filter basket were clogged. We could not unclog them using a sponge so I started poking each one individually with a toothpick before deciding there was no way we would have the time or patience to do it every day. So, we tried a brush with plastic bristles and, within seconds, the basket was completely unclogged. So, we bought a small brush with a long handle and use it to clean the filter basket and the bottom of the pot.
